 2023 Preview

Pell City finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Pell City finished seventh in Class 6A region six with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Panthers lost as many games as in any season since 2009. The defense allowed a team record 447 points last season.

Pell City struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 44.7 points a game.

The Panthers would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-17 record. Since 2010, Pell City has gone a combined 58-78. Their 42.6% winning percentage ranks 41st in Class 6A over the past thirteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Pell City has managed to compile a record of 119-145. Their 45.0% winning percentage ranks 38th in Class 6A and 230th in the AHSAA.

The Panthers will be under the direction of new head football coach Rush Propst as they enter the 2023 season.  Coach Propst won 176 games in Alabama before taking his talents to Georgia the past fifteen seasons. Will this be a great hire for the Panthers? Time will tell. His 295 wins rank 6th among active coaches in the AHSAA. The win total includes 176 wins in Alabama and 119 victories from outside the state. Over the course of his career, Coach Propst's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of thirteen times and won six region championships. He has a 42-8 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches. Coach Propst won five state championships prior to arriving at Pell City, the last coming in 2005 at Hoover. The Panthers have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 6A. Their opponents had a combined record of 63-42 last season. That ranks 3rd in Class 6A and 17th in the AHSAA.

This season, the Panthers will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region six.

The Panthers open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Moody on Friday, August 25 at Bill Morris Stadium. Last year the Moody Blue Devils finished with an overall record of 10-2 and in second place in Class 5A region six. The Blue Devils lost in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs to Arab by a score of 42-20.

Pell City and Moody have met a total of 8 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 6-2-0 record against the Blue Devils. They last met in 2022 with Moody winning by a score of 56-21.
